The Dubsism 2013 NFL Draft Review – What We Told Them vs. What They Did vs. What ESPN Won’t Tell You

JW and Goodell draft

Things to Remember:

  • References to the “Kiper Theory” are ironically based on our Dubsism Anti-Kiper NFL Draft Board. The “Kiper Theory” is the one that states teams must take the best player available, regardless of team needs.
  • We rate drafts using the proprietary formula of the Dubsism Draft Quotient. This formula rates drafts picks based on rankings of players players based on overall ratings and within each position, balanced against team needs and when the pick was made.
  • We refused to change our board based on hype, workouts, or whatever Todd McShay or any of those other hacks says. As the only draft prognosticators who actually watches college football games and not just film clips earlier than December, we based our rankings on something simple: the guy we thought would be the best NFL player. We covered as to why we reject conventional wisdom in our Team-by-Team warning about the NFL Draft.
  • The more Mel Kiper disagrees with us, the more we believe we are right.  At the same time, we have undying respect for a guy we also think is a complete fraud. Kiper never stands behind things he says unless he happened to be right, and he changes his mind constantly in the run up to the draft. On the other hand, how can you not respect a guy who has made a whole career and millions of dollars out of saying “Trev Alberts sucks?”

To be honest, it’s a minor miracle that D.J Hayden is even alive after that chest injury and subsequent emergency open heart surgery. It’s a major miracle that he is a legitimate NFL player mere months after that near-death situation. We never saw that coming four months ago when the Big Board was created.

There’s also no accident that the Cardinals are a historically terrible NFL franchise, and they are the ones who wasted apick on Tyrann Mathieu. Even if they can keep from being another drug suspension waiting to happen, they intend to turn a 5’7″ guy who hasn’t seen a football field in almost two years into a free safety who…

A) …has no chance of supporting the run defense

B)… will never be able to cover a tight end coming across the middle

C)… is going to have to play pass defense in a league being populated with 6″3″ wide receivers and with much tighter rules than he’s ever played under

This is easily the worst pick in this entire draft.

The First Round, Pick by Pick

1) Kansas City Chiefs

  • Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Defensive End, Inside Linebacker
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Chiefs are the most talented, yet lousy team in the NFL. The only won two games, but they had six Pro Bowlers. They couldn’t fill their biggest need with this pick; there simply isn’t a “franchise” quarterback in this draft, but they took care of that with the Alex Smith trade. I still thought they would trade down and stock-pile some picks, but protecting thier new quarterback isn’t a bad idea either.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan

2) Jacksonville Jaguars

  • Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Offensive Line, Linebacker
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
  • What Dubsism Believed: If for some reason, the Chiefs don’t take Luke Joeckel, Jacksonville has to grab him. Honestly, we didn’t really understand the plummet of Jarvis Jones, except for the fact people thought that neck issue might make him the next David Pollack. The Damontre Moore plunge wasn’t really a mystery after the combines.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M

3) Oakland Raiders (pick traded to Miami)

  • Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Cornerback, Defensive End
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
  • What Dubsism Believed:  Right now, the Raiders best corner is Michael Huff, a converted safety. This is one reason why the Raiders pass defense is pitiful. Another reason is the Raider pass rush could be on a milk carton; it’s been missing for years. This is why we thought the way to go was either to take either Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama or Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State, especially when Lotulelei fell due to his health issue. But as we will see shortly, the Raiders aren’t afraid of heart-related health problems.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded the pick to the Miami Dolphins, who used it to take Dion James, DE, Oregon.

4) Philadelphia Eagles

  • Biggest Needs: Cornerback, Linebacker, Offensive Line
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie experiment was been a complete failure. DeMeco Ryan and Mychal Kendricks are solid linebackers, but they need another piece to be a complete unit. The offensive line is a mess, which is why I was convinced the Eagles would not address any of those issues.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

5) Detroit Lions

  • Biggest Needs: Defensive End, Cornerback, Offensive Guard
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
  • What Dubsism Believed: The right side of the Detroit Lions’ offensive line has been the weak side, with the weakest link being veteran right guard Stephen Peterman. The 30-year-old was entering the final season of his contract, and here was a perfect opportunity for Detroit to upgrade with Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama.  The loss of Cliff Avril also meant the Motor City Kitties could have got some real value in a defensive end like Bjoern Werner or Damontre Moore.  Alabama CB Dee Milliner was also a realistic possibility here. To make a long story short, the Lions had a lot of choices, and you had to know they would make the wrong one. Even thought the Lions met a key need by taking a defensive end, the fact they took one so unproven makes this one of the weakest picks in the first round.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Ezekial Ansah, DE, BYU

6) Cleveland Browns

  • Biggest Needs: Defensive End, Safety, Cornerback
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
  • What Dubsism Believed:  I said it before, and I’ll say it again. I was shocked that Werner was still on the board at this pick. I’m even more shocked the Browns passed on him considering their needs, but at least they helped their pass rush. .
  • What They Actually Did: Took Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU

7) Arizona Cardinals

  • Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Offensive Tackle, Cornerback
  • What the Kiper Thoery Said: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
  • What Dubsism Believed: The top tackles were already gone, there was no quarterback to take, and they must have been scared off of Dee Milliner’s shoulder. I can’t argue too hard about upgrading the offensive line.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina.5

8 ) Buffalo Bills (pick traded to St. Louis)

  • Biggest Needs: Linebacker, Quarterback, Wide Receiver
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Bills have had one of the league’s least productive passing offenses, in large part due to the lack of progression from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is now gone. but there was no quarterback to take here. Mingo was taken in the previous pick, and Ogletree fell down many boards. I think the bills did a smart thing by getting more picks rather than taking an over-rated Tavon Austin here.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to St. Louis, who used it to take Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia

9) New York Jets

  • Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Linebacker, Safety
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Says: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
  • What Dubsism Believed: The best players on the board at this point are defensive linemen, which is actually one of the strengths the Jets have. There isn’t a solution to their quarterback problems in this draft, but this is exactly why I thought this was where the Geno Smith mistake was going to happen.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama

10) Tennessee Titans

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Guard, Safety, Running Back
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
  • What Dubsism Believed: Mike Munchak is head coach of the Titans. Mike Munchak has criticized the play of his offensive line. Mike Munchak is also a Hall-of-Fame offensive lineman.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama

11) San Diego Chargers

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Line, Cornerback, Defensive Line
  • What the Kiper Theory Says: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Says: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon
  • What Dubsism Believes: The Chargers have a desperate need at guard, Cooper would have been the obvious choice except the Cardinals grabbed him at pick #7. But they still need help on teh offensiove front.
  • What They Actually Did: Took D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama

12) Miami Dolphins (pick traded to Oakland)

  • Biggest Needs: Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Offensive Tackle
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Cordarelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Keenan Allen, WR California
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Miami Dolphins drafted their franchise quarterback last season in Ryan Tannehill, but now they need to find him a go-to wide receiver. Brian Hartline and Davone Bess are solid possession receivers, but the Dolphins lack a down-field playmaker. That’s why I really don’t understand trading up to get a defensive end who was really a part-time player at Oregon.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to the Oakland Raiders, who used it to take D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston

13) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (pick traded to New York Jets)

  • Biggest Needs: Cornerback, Defensive Tackle, Safety
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Manti Te’o, ILB, Natre Dame
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
  • What Dubsism Believed: Richardson would have made a perfect partner on the Buccaneer defensive line for Gerald McCoy, but the Bucs used this pick as part of acquiring Derrelle Revis.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded the pick to the New York Jets, who used it to take Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri.

14) Carolina Panthers

  • Biggest Needs: Defensive Tackle, Cornerback, Offensive Tackle
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
  • What Dubsism Believed: They needed a solution for their offensive tackle problem immediately, but the best options for that were gone. They just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to make the best pick of the first round by grabbing a top-three talent this far down the board.
  • What They Actually Did:  Took Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah
15) New Orleans Saints
  • Biggest Needs: Linebascker, Cornerback, Defensive End
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Sharif  Floyd, DT, Florida
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Saints need help on the defensive side of the ball, period.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas

16) St. Louis Rams (pick traded to Buffalo)

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Tackle, Safety, Linebacker
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
  • What Dubsism Believed: Once the Jets passed on Geno Smith twice, it was clear the talk of him going in the first round was over, because even though it seemed likely the Bills would use this pick on a quarterback, Smith’s name consistently was not amongst those rumored to be shuffling off to Buffalo.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to the Buffalo Bills, who used it to select E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State

17) Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Biggest Needs: Running Back, Linebacker, Offensive Line
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Says: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Steelers have a long tradition of taking the top player on the board, and since they love defense, it was easy to see them taking Ansah or Vaccaro, but both of them were gone by this pick. That’s why they could not ignore Jarvis Jones.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia

18 ) Dallas Cowboys (pick traded to San Francisco)

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Line, Offensive Line, Offensive Line
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
  • What Dubsism Believed:  Trading this pick was the smartest thing the Cowboys could have done. Originally, I thought they should have traded up to Kansas City’s #1 pick by offering QB Kyle Orton and picks to get Luke Joeckel.  But now that the the prime o-line beef is gone, trading down makes perfect sense.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded the pick to the San Francisco 49ers, who used it to take Eric Reid, S, LSU

19) New York Giants

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Line, Linebacker, Cornerback
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
  • What Dubsism Believes: To be blunt, the Giants offensive line sucks. The Giants have no choice but to draft offensive linemen, and they must take the best one still on the board at this pick. The problem is that the ones worthy of a first-round pick, except for Barrett Jones, C, Alabama, are likely going to be gone by this point, and the Giants really need tackles and guards.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Justin Pugh, OT, Syracuse

20) Chicago Bears

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Tackle, Offensive Guard, Tight End
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Cordarelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Bears offensive line needs are so desperate that the whole world has to know what they must to do. Having said that, I wasn’t surprised to see the Bears make one of the worst picks of the first round.
  • What They Actually Did: Took  Kyle Long, OT, Oregon

21) Cincinnati Bengals

  • Biggest Needs: Linebacker, Safety, Center
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
  • What Dubsism Believed: At first, it seemed that the Bengals had a rare choice to get the best guy at two of the positions where they need help. Vaccaro was the best safety on both the Kiper and Dubsism boards, but he didn’t make it this far. Alabama’s Barrett Jones is a two-time All-American center who could could fit nicely in this slot, but the Bengals went for more weapons on offense.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame

22) St. Louis Rams (pick traded to the Atlanta Falcons via the Washington Redskins)

  • Biggest Needs:  Offensive Tackle, Safety, Linebacker
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Keenan Allen, WR, California
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississppi State
  • What Dubsism Believed: This is the pick from the RGIII trade last season. The Rams already got their wide receiver at the #8 pick,  so it made sense to deal this pick. The Falcons needed help in the defensive secondary, so this was a good spot to get Desmond Trufant.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to the Washington Redskins, who traded ti to the Atlanta Falcons, who used it to take Desmond Trufant, BS, Washington

23) Minnesota Vikings

  • Biggest Needs: Wide Receiver, Defensive Tackle, Inside Linebacker
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Sylvester Williams, DE, North Carolina
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Datone Jones, DE, UCLA
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Vikings had to replace Percy Harvin, they needed a big defensive tackle, and it was a popular thought that this could be where the Manti Te’o mistake would be made.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

24) Indianapolis Colts

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Line, Cornerback, Wide Receiver
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
  • What Dubsism Believed:  While it is true that with the exception of Anthoiny Castonzo, Indianapolis could use an upgrade at each offensive line position, the simply could not pass on the opportunity to get a top defensive lineman.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State

25) Seattle Seahawks (pick traded to Minnesota)

  • Biggest Needs: Wide Receiver, Offensive Line
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
  • What Dubsism Believed:  The Seahawks got their receiver (Percy Harvin) by trading this pick.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to the Mionnesota Vikings who used it to take Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

26) Green Bay Packers

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Tackle (particulary a left tackle), Cornerback, Safety
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Packers really had to hope there would be a guy at a position they needed to fall this far. That didn’t really happen, so after the failure to get a running back in free agency, I thought for sure that Eddie Lacy would go with this pick.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Datone Jones, DE, UCLA

27) Houston Texans

  • Biggest Needs: Offensive Tackle, Cornerback, Wide Receiver
  • What the Kiper Theory Says: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Says: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina
  • What Dubsism Believes: Upon further review, you know this is the early pick Kiper would love to have back. Quinton Patton proved himself to not be a first-rounder, and luckily for Texans, several other guys emerged in perfect position to be taken at this pick.
  • What They Actually Did: Took DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson

28) Denver Broncos

  • Biggest Needs: Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, Cornerback
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Kawaan Short. DT, Purdue
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
  • What Dubsism Believed: Kiper was higher on Short than I am, but then again, I live in Purdue country and saw every one of Short’s games. On one hand, he could easily be that “Vince Wilfork”-style immovable object in the middle of the d-line.  But on the other hand, he could be the guy who commits to IHOP and eats his way out of the league. Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia, is a safer pick here.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Sylvester Williams, DE, North Carolina

29) New England Patriots (pick traded to Minnesota)

  • Biggest Needs: Wide Receiver, Linebacker, Secondary
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Matt Elam, S, Florida
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
  • What Dubsism Believed: Nobody ought to really be surprised by the Patriots trading down yet again, especially since they need receivers and I don’t think they wanted to take the guy who the Vikings coveted in this spot.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to Minnesota who used it to take Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee

30) Atlanta Falcons (pick traded to St. Louis)

  • Biggest Needs: Tight End, Defensive Tackle, Running Back
  • What the Kiper Thoery Said: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
  • What the Dubsism Big Board Said: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
  • What Dubsism Believed: The Falcons moved up from this sport, and while they didn’t address a crucial need, they did get a good pick. The Rams continued to meet needs in this spot by grabbing a linebacker.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to St. Louis, who used it to take Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia

31) San Francisco 49ers (pick traded to Dallas)

  • Biggest Needs: Defensive Line, Bench depth in general
  • What the Kiper Theory Said:  Jonathan Jenkins, DT, Georgia
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
  • What Dubsism Believed: Much like the Falcons, the 49ers didn’t meet an immediate need when they traded up, but they still got a good player. The Cowboys used this pick to address their biggest need.
  • What They Actually Did: Traded this pick to the Dallas Cowboys, who used it to take Travis Frederick, C, Wisconsin

32) Baltimore Ravens

  • Biggest Needs: Inside Linebacker, Safety, Cornerback
  • What the Kiper Theory Said: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
  • What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
  • What Dubsism Believed: There’s no way the Ravens would have taken an offensive player in the first round, considering they likely have to replace Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Paul Kruger.
  • What They Actually Did: Took Matt Elam, S, Florida

Complete Draft Analysis With The Dubsism Draft Quotient

The Dubsism Draft Quotient (DDQ) is a proprietary formula used by the research staff here at Dubsism to more accurately rate a team’s performance in a draft as opposed to the “crystal ball approach” of how a certain player is going to perform in the NFL, or the ego-centric “Kiper/McShay” approach which is more centered on simply appearing to know more than anybody else.

Rather, the Dubsism Draft Quotient is based on three key factors:

  • Ranking eligible players by overall proven skills that are most likely to translate to the NFL from the college game, then by ranking those players by position
  • A team’s understanding of the needs they have which could be filled via the draft
  • A team’s understanding of balancing positional needs vs. getting maximum value in a particular draft position

The simplest way to understand the DDQ is to remember that a rating of 1.00 represents the “ideal” pick; in other words, taking the best player who meets one of your biggest needs at the correct spot in the draft. This is because 1.00 is the best score one can get with the first overall pick. From there, scores higher than 1.00 are possible depending on the player’s ranking, when they are picked, and a team’s needs. Conversely, scores lower than 1.00 are also possible. The higher the score, the better the pick is rated according to current knowledge.

The one catch is that while 1.00 is an ideal score for an individual pick, it is not a good score for an overall draft. This is because the DDQ rewards teams the understand the “value pick;” taking the player who may have slipped on other draft boards because of the general witchcraft the NFL Draft process has become. On the other hand, it also punished the “over-traders” and the “reachers.”

Having said that, here’s how we rated each team’s performance.

Wow this must have taken an incredibly long time to put together.

I blows me away how many offensive lines in the NFL do in fact truly suck. It’s not just the Giants. The Bears, Eagles, and Panthers, and you name it also have awful lines protecting big name guys.

Don’t forget Cowboys, who may be the. And forget about the knee thing, the fact that Adrian Peterson did what he did behind a Viking O-Line made of Spam and floor sweepings was amazing.
