The Dubsism 2013 NFL Draft Review – What We Told Them vs. What They Did vs. What ESPN Won’t Tell You

Things to Remember:

• References to the “Kiper Theory” are ironically based on our Dubsism Anti-Kiper NFL Draft Board. The “Kiper Theory” is the one that states teams must take the best player available, regardless of team needs.
• We rate drafts using the proprietary formula of the Dubsism Draft Quotient. This formula rates drafts picks based on rankings of players players based on overall ratings and within each position, balanced against team needs and when the pick was made.
• We refused to change our board based on hype, workouts, or whatever Todd McShay or any of those other hacks says. As the only draft prognosticators who actually watches college football games and not just film clips earlier than December, we based our rankings on something simple: the guy we thought would be the best NFL player. We covered as to why we reject conventional wisdom in our Team-by-Team warning about the NFL Draft.
• The more Mel Kiper disagrees with us, the more we believe we are right.  At the same time, we have undying respect for a guy we also think is a complete fraud. Kiper never stands behind things he says unless he happened to be right, and he changes his mind constantly in the run up to the draft. On the other hand, how can you not respect a guy who has made a whole career and millions of dollars out of saying “Trev Alberts sucks?”

To be honest, it’s a minor miracle that D.J Hayden is even alive after that chest injury and subsequent emergency open heart surgery. It’s a major miracle that he is a legitimate NFL player mere months after that near-death situation. We never saw that coming four months ago when the Big Board was created.

There’s also no accident that the Cardinals are a historically terrible NFL franchise, and they are the ones who wasted apick on Tyrann Mathieu. Even if they can keep from being another drug suspension waiting to happen, they intend to turn a 5’7″ guy who hasn’t seen a football field in almost two years into a free safety who…

A) …has no chance of supporting the run defense

B)… will never be able to cover a tight end coming across the middle

C)… is going to have to play pass defense in a league being populated with 6″3″ wide receivers and with much tighter rules than he’s ever played under

This is easily the worst pick in this entire draft.

• What Dubsism Believed: The Chiefs are the most talented, yet lousy team in the NFL. The only won two games, but they had six Pro Bowlers. They couldn’t fill their biggest need with this pick; there simply isn’t a “franchise” quarterback in this draft, but they took care of that with the Alex Smith trade. I still thought they would trade down and stock-pile some picks, but protecting thier new quarterback isn’t a bad idea either.

2) Jacksonville Jaguars

Honestly, we didn’t really understand the plummet of Jarvis Jones, except for the fact people thought that neck issue might make him the next David Pollack. The Damontre Moore plunge wasn’t really a mystery after the combines.

3) Oakland Raiders (pick traded to Miami)

• Biggest Needs: Quarterback, Cornerback, Defensive End

• What Dubsism Believed:  Right now, the Raiders best corner is Michael Huff, a converted safety. This is one reason why the Raiders pass defense is pitiful. Another reason is the Raider pass rush could be on a milk carton; it’s been missing for years. This is why we thought the way to go was either to take either Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama or Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State, especially when Lotulelei fell due to his health issue. But as we will see shortly, the Raiders aren’t afraid of heart-related health problems.
• What They Actually Did: Traded the pick to the Miami Dolphins, who used it to take Dion James, DE, Oregon.

4) Philadelphia Eagles

• What Dubsism Believed: The Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie experiment was been a complete failure. DeMeco Ryan and Mychal Kendricks are solid linebackers, but they need another piece to be a complete unit. The offensive line is a mess, which is why I was convinced the Eagles would not address any of those issues.
• What They Actually Did: Took Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

5) Detroit Lions

• Biggest Needs: Defensive End, Cornerback, Offensive Guard
• What the Kiper Theory Said: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia
• What The Dubsism Big Board Said: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan
• What Dubsism Believed: The right side of the Detroit Lions’ offensive line has been the weak side, with the weakest link being veteran right guard Stephen Peterman. The 30-year-old was entering the final season of his contract, and here was a perfect opportunity for Detroit to upgrade with Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama.  The loss of Cliff Avril also meant the Motor City Kitties could have got some real value in a defensive end like Bjoern Werner or Damontre Moore.  Alabama CB Dee Milliner was also a realistic possibility here. To make a long story short, the Lions had a lot of choices, and you had to know they would make the wrong one. Even thought the Lions met a key need by taking a defensive end, the fact they took one so unproven makes this one of the weakest picks in the first round.

6) Cleveland Browns 

• Biggest Needs: Defensive End, Safety, Cornerback

• What Dubsism Believed:  I said it before, and I’ll say it again. I was shocked that Werner was still on the board at this pick. I’m even more shocked the Browns passed on him considering their needs, but at least they helped their pass rush. .

7) Arizona Cardinals

• What Dubsism Believed: The top tackles were already gone, there was no quarterback to take, and they must have been scared off of Dee Milliner’s shoulder. I can’t argue too hard about upgrading the offensive line.

8 ) Buffalo Bills (pick traded to St. Louis)

• Biggest Needs: Linebacker, Quarterback, Wide Receiver

• What Dubsism Believed: The Bills have had one of the league’s least productive passing offenses, in large part due to the lack of progression from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is now gone. but there was no quarterback to take here. Mingo was taken in the previous pick, and Ogletree fell down many boards. I think the bills did a smart thing by getting more picks rather than taking an over-rated Tavon Austin here.

9) New York Jets

• What Dubsism Believed: The best players on the board at this point are defensive linemen, which is actually one of the strengths the Jets have. There isn’t a solution to their quarterback problems in this draft, but this is exactly why I thought this was where the Geno Smith mistake was going to happen.

That’s why I really don’t understand trading up to get a defensive end who was really a part-time player at Oregon.

13) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (pick traded to New York Jets)

• Biggest Needs: Cornerback, Defensive Tackle, Safety

• What Dubsism Believed: Richardson would have made a perfect partner on the Buccaneer defensive line for Gerald McCoy, but the Bucs used this pick as part of acquiring Derrelle Revis.

14) Carolina Panthers

• What Dubsism Believed: They needed a solution for their offensive tackle problem immediately, but the best options for that were gone. They just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to make the best pick of the first round by grabbing a top-three talent this far down the board.

The Dubsism Draft Quotient (DDQ) is a proprietary formula used by the research staff here at Dubsism to more accurately rate a team’s performance in a draft as opposed to the “crystal ball approach” of how a certain player is going to perform in the NFL, or the ego-centric “Kiper/McShay” approach which is more centered on simply appearing to know more than anybody else.

Rather, the Dubsism Draft Quotient is based on three key factors:

• Ranking eligible players by overall proven skills that are most likely to translate to the NFL from the college game, then by ranking those players by position
• A team’s understanding of the needs they have which could be filled via the draft
• A team’s understanding of balancing positional needs vs. getting maximum value in a particular draft position

The simplest way to understand the DDQ is to remember that a rating of 1.00 represents the “ideal” pick; in other words, taking the best player who meets one of your biggest needs at the correct spot in the draft. This is because 1.00 is the best score one can get with the first overall pick. From there, scores higher than 1.00 are possible depending on the player’s ranking, when they are picked, and a team’s needs. Conversely, scores lower than 1.00 are also possible. The higher the score, the better the pick is rated according to current knowledge.

The one catch is that while 1.00 is an ideal score for an individual pick, it is not a good score for an overall draft. This is because the DDQ rewards teams the understand the “value pick;” taking the player who may have slipped on other draft boards because of the general witchcraft the NFL Draft process has become. On the other hand, it also punished the “over-traders” and the “reachers.”
