I agree with you about Michael Jordan. Great player, but he was a benefit of circumstance. He was lucky to get Phil and Scottie on his side. He also was lucky that the Celts never got to play with Len Bias, and that the early-90’s Trail Blazers never had a healthy Arvydas Sabonis on their team.
Speaking of Phil, those Laker teams from 00-02 never win anything without him, either. Heck, they shouldn’t have, anyway. They did because the Blazers and Kings were choke artists, the Spurs took a step back, and the Eastern Conference was extreme failage.
One of those title teams, the 01 Lakers, was extremely overrated because of their playoff run against very flawed competition. The Blazers were basket cases by the time the playoffs rolled around (that team should have been blown up after that season. Don’t know why they tried to keep that core together). The Kings were missing something. The Spurs weren’t that great, and missing their second-leaing scorer. And, the Sixers were one of the worst Finals participants ever.
When the Lakers ran into a revitalized Spur team in 03, and the 313 in 04, it was over. They couldn’t beat varsity competition.

Another thing about Jordan I don’t get. Where else does somebody get called “the greatest ever” when they took a powder at the height of their career to go be a shitty minor-league baseball player?

I have heard several things about that. One was that Stern told him to leave for a year and a half or so because of his gambling. Another one was that Jordan was worn out, especially after his father’s death, and needed some time off.
Since he retired right before the season, I believe the latter more (but anything’s possible). I also heard that he wouldn’t have come back to the Bulls at the end of 95 if there wasn’t an end in sight to the MLB lockout.
Part of me, though, says that Wilt Chamberlain is the best ever because, as he told Jordan once, they changed the rules to make it harder for him. They didn’t do that for Mike. The refs went out of their way to make calls for him. It was pathetic. One example was late in Game 6 of the 92 ECF against Cleveland when Larry Nance didn’t touch him, but a foul was still called.
