This episode represents a rare departure from the world of sports.  J-Dub wishes the shootings in Charleston will serve as the wake-up call this country sorely needs, but at the same time he knows why that won’t happen.

I agree with you about everything you said, especially on gun control. When outlaws have guns and regular people can’t, that is a big problem.

What I don’t want to hear, though, is about how the Christians in that church who died martyred themselves righteously and turned the other cheek.

As a Christian myself, I want to point out that Jesus was talking about people who went out to preach his word, and may be hit because they share truth with people that can’t handle it. It has nothing to do with people seeking you out at your home, church, or work to shoot you. If someone in that church would have shot that guy, I wouldn’t have had a problem with it.

Speak of the Devil: Someone on Facebook posted a saying of Jesus when he was taken away. He said “Those who live by the sword, die by the sword”. Jesus’s arrest is not like what happened yesterday. Jesus was a agitator, and was doing things that the Jewish leaders weren’t happy with (the money lender table incident being one).

He also knew that he had to die for our sins. It’s not the same as what happened yesterday. People are so stupid sometimes. Believing in Jesus’s death and resurrection is sufficient for salvation, not dying unnecessarily like those people did yesterday.

Another silly argument I’m hearing in the wake of these murders is the comparison of South Carolina to Nazi Germany by equating the confederate flag to the Swastika, along with calls to outlaw the Confederate flag. This is even dumber than the “gun control” argument.

    1) If you don’t live in South Carolina, then this isn’t up to you. If you want to do something about it, then move there, become a registered voter, and get it changed. If you are not willing to do that, then you should be ashamed of yourself for using the deaths of 9 innocent people to advance a political agenda which does not affect you nor are you willing to substantially act on.

    2) It’s a flag…that’s it. It is merely a symbol, which means it has no inherent power other than that which you choose to give it. If we could change the behavior of people by taking down a flag, then this might be valid. But until then…

    3) Regardless of the accuracy or inaccuracy of our common beliefs on slavery, the only thing it has in common with Nazism is they are both products of European invention. The inhuman nature of slavery does not change the fact that it existed as a function of economics; it was the easiest and cheapest way to solve a labor demand problem. On the other hand, Nazism was a political ideology which was based on world domination and the extermination of entire races of people. Not only is that a major distinction, but by making the comparison, you are obfuscating what the events of Charleston are really all about.

In other words, its time to stop worrying about flags and guns, and start worrying about why this country produces as many messed up people as it does.

Well, J-Dub, one theory (about the messed-up people being produced) is that the news media buys and sells fear and creates crime and boogeymen for jobs and profit (this isn’t my theory. It’s Charles Manson’s, of all people. That’s what he said to Geraldo when he was interviewed by him in the 80’s).

The news media also likes to create fear about other things, like climate change (which I am not too sure about, but there is a good chance that a lot of that is fixed so that the right narrative is sold to the right people).

I’d love to be able to say you’re wrong…but you’re not.

Also, I like when you talked about how the right and left have to compromise. That is so true.

The right wing seems to be obsessed with two things: Homosexuality and socialism. They rail against gay marriage, and they like to put the socialist tag on anyone who is on welfare and food stamps (even after they sign trade agreements to ship more and more jobs overseas).

And, the left seems to be into turning certain groups as “victims”:

Both sides need to grow up. Stupid labels won’t help us against our enemies.
