The 2019 Dubsism Blog-A-Thon Calendar – The “Magnificent” Seven

2018 was the year I discovered the movie Blog-A-Thon. I’ve participated in several, and in the coming year, I’ve already announced the first one, Box Office Jocks.  I’ll be hosting that one with Paul S. From Return to the 80’s. But I decided “why stop there?” I’ve already seen several great ideas for blog-a-thons being posted for 2019, so I thought, “Why not post what I’m planning?

Fret not, future participants…just because I’m scheduling them now doesn’t mean I’m expecting you to sign up today. Each of these blog-a-thons will get it’s own introductory post closer to the actual date just like we did with Box Office Jocks. Think of this post as a bloggy version of a “save the date” card…you’ve still got plenty of time to decide if you’re going to the wedding or just going to show up at the reception to snag a free dinner.

Like I said, I have already seen several great project being announced for the upcoming year, and I certainly look forward to joining as many of them as I can. In a bit of “you join mine, and I’ll join yours,” for a running tab on all the blog-a-thons in which Dubsism is participating or hosting, you can always visit my Movies and Blog-a-Thon page for all projects past, present and future.

Be sure to note that as you scroll through this list, not only can you be a participant, but there are co-hosting opportunities available as well!

Let the blogging begin!

The Box Office Jocks Blog-A-Thon: February 2nd – 3rd, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and Return to the 80’s:  You can see the introductory post here. This is a blog-a-thon dedicated to actors who were once athletes or films in which big-time jocks make an appearance.

Dubsism’s Contribution: They Were Expendable, 1945

The “Surprise The Cat” Blog-A-Thon: March 17th, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and (your name here?): In honor of International Cat Day on March 17th, this blog-a-thon is being directed by the official Dubsism house-cat, who happens to be named Surprise from the day she ran out from under a bush in our back yard and adopted us.  Obviously, this is about films with a feline theme, but the “surprise” aspect is if you feel lucky, you can tell us an actor or a genre of film, and Surprise the Cat will send you a movie to write about.

Dubsism’s Contribution: Paper Lion, 1968

The M. Emmet Walsh Blog-A-Thon: March 22nd – 24th, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and (your name here?): A celebration of all things Walsh on his 84th birthday, about whom Roger Ebert once said “any movie with M. Emmet Walsh in it couldn’t be all bad.”

Dubsism’s Contribution: Fletch, 1985

The “Cops” Blog-A-Thon: May 18th-19th, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and (your name here?): Just the facts…to commemorate National Police Week, this one is all about your favorite screen cops.

Dubsism’s Contribution: The New Centurions (1974) and an examination of how I can by summed up by the main characters of the television series Barney Miller (1975-1982).

The “No Reviews, Tell Us Your Story” Blog-a-Thon: July 13th-14th, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and (your name here?): Time to go in a bit of a different direction. For this blog-a-thon, we aren’t looking for the “Siskel and Ebert” treatment.  Instead, this blog-a-thon is all about sharing our connections to our favorite films, because we all have them.  Sometimes, those connections are to films which are not favorites, yet we bond with them nevertheless.  A perfect example comes in a recent Blog-A-Thon contribution, the 1963 Rock Hudson vehicle “A Gathering of Eagles.” It’s not a great film, nor is it one of my favorites, but I identify with it because I grew up on U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command bases. I knew what a B-52 was before I knew how to tie my own shoes.

Dubsism’s Contribution: Father Goose (1964)

The “1st and 10” Blog-A-Thon: September 6th – 8th, 2019

Hosted By Dubsism and The Midnite Drive-In:  Coinciding with the start of the American football season, this blog-a-thon is dedicated to football films or movies in which American footballers appear.  We’ll also accept Canadian footballers as well, but I don’t know of any movies featuring the CFL.

Dubsism’s Contribution: Necessary Roughness (1991)

The “Send In The Marines” Blog-A-Thon: November 10th – 11th

Hosted By Dubsism and ReelWeegieMidget Reviews: November 10th is a special day for all U.S. Marines as it marks the anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps in 1775. Naturally, this blog-a-thon is all about the United States Marines…either films featuring the Corps or actors who served in the USMC.

Dubsism’s Contribution: Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and The D.I. (1957)

The football blog-a-thon is all about guys who wore helmets (not including Petr Cech.) But like the Jocks blog-a-thon, there’s so many possibilities!

An observation: On Mar 17th you have the “Surprise the Cat” Blogathon. The following week you have the M. Emmet Walsh Blogathon. Walsh’s initials are MEW. Just wondering if that’s a coincidence…

Anyway I just want to get in my chops for these:

Surprise the Cat: An overview of Catwoman from the 60’s Batman TV show

    M. Emmet Walsh: Coach Turnbull in “Back to School”

Cops: Lethal Weapon II (but with some peripheral comments on the other 3 movies.)

    Marines: Full Metal Jacket

And I guess I can come up with another reminiscence of drive-in history for the No reviews blogathon.

I saved the Football one for last because if you are still looking for a co-host I would like to volunteer. I happen to love football in all its forms (pro, college, high school, even peewee.) Either way I want to claim The Longest Yard (the good one, with Burt Reynolds, not that POS with Adam Sandler…)

    Let me know.

One more thing…The Longest Yard features Joe Kapp, who not only has a Dubsy Award named after him, but stars in what may be the best “old men brawling” video ever…
