I promise I’ll keep this one short…but the WordPress Daily Wrting Prompt got me again…

The school store…the first splashes of capitalism as doled out by a 6th grade teacher. To their credit, whoever ran the one in my school knew I was coming. One day, I found my self in needed of the standard #2 pencil. I came away 28 which still sit on my desk to this day.
They had a set…one for each team in the National Football League at the time. I found an ordinary, yet perfect wooden holder for them, and they’re been the perfect desk tchotchke for a sports geek throughout my life. They sat unaccompanied for nearly a half-century until earlier this week, when my wife came home from one of those consignment stores with their new perfect partner.
Thanks to Mrs. J-Dub’s eye for bric-a-brac, the corkboard behind my desk with the pencils, there is a nearly complete set of NFL helmet pins which match their era. Those in the know should spot the teams are arranged in order of the league’s divisions at the time…and can figure out which three helmets are missing.
The incomplete nature doesn’t matter. In a sense, it fits the fact the erasers on some of the pencils are falling apart. Sometimes, sentimentality trumps perfection.
