Change My Mind: Because WordPress Said So…

Daily writing prompt
What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

They say there’s a “first time for everything.” That’s a perfect example of a fact, if for no other reason that there cannot be a sequence of events without an initial occurrence. This is the first time I’ve ever responded to a WordPress Daily Writing Prompt before. That’s another fact. Since this blog features a series dedicated to this very topic, could there be a better time? That’s an opinion…which means if you disagree, then you can do what the very theme of this prompt suggests.

As for that theme, I change my mind all the time. There’s a simple reason for that. Static opinions are the definition of anti-intellectual. If the entirety of human history wasn’t about the expansion of our collective knowledge base, the chances we would have evolved beyond eating raw yak meat while scribbling one on the cave wall would be uncomfortably remote.

Think about it. If the concept of discovering different data points leading to different conclusions weren’t true, mankind’s progression from hunter-gatherers to modern civilization would have been frozen in amber somewhere short of today.

That’s the reason behind my almost immediate distrust of unreasonably static opinions. For purposes of this discussion, be sure to understand the difference between facts and opinions. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, Earth’s gravity accelerates objects at 32 feet per second. Those things aren’t changing; they are facts. The problem is the America of 2023 is a place where the treating of static opinion as undebatable has made the questioning of such “facts” an act of heresy.

That’s my opinion. Feel free to question it.

Here’s my rationale. The ability to question that which is accepted is the whetstone upon which the “cutting edge” of progress is honed. The quest for new knowledge without the investigation of current beliefs is impossible. Shutting down the questioning of any belief through the corruption of fact is a guarantee for intellectual regression.

Here’s the bottom line. Not only should you freely embrace the intellectual fortitude it takes to accept a different point of view based on new discovery, you should constantly challenge everything you believe through such discovery.

Doubt that?

Change my mind.
