George Washington is universally regarded as the “Father of Our Country.” Baseball is still known as “America’s Pastime.” But the sport did not exist when Washington was doing his fathering, which leaves us asking the natural question: What sort of baseball player would George Washington have been?
That makes Dubsism the perfect place to ponder such a question; the screed of a sports blogger who is self-avowed history nerd. As such, my first question would be what would the scouting reports look like on a 6’4″ big-armed kid from Virginia?
Would he have been seen as a fire-balling righty? After all, the folklore is that he did throw a silver dollar across the Potomac. But on the other hand, anybody with an arm that big could be the right-field cannon-arm you need to gun down runners at the plate. On top of that, he could be a right-handed slugger; the same swing that can cut down a cherry tree could also jack 40 dingers in the bigs.
Because Washington died decades before baseball, we may never know. But we can create a pretty damn good roster of baseball players, all of whom had the given name “George.”
