Your New College Football Heavyweight Champion: The Baylor Bears

Last week when Central Florida took the title, I didn’t make many friends in Orlando by saying I didn’t think the Knights would hold the belt very long. Six day later, I was proven right when Baylor came to town and left with their seventh title.

Another thing I pointed out last week is because of the way college football schedules are setup, the Dubsism College Football Heavyweight Title tends to bounce around within a conference, the exceptions being the non-conference games and the bowl/playoff season. While it has yet to be determined what the Big 12 contingent in the post-season will look like, Baylor’s remaining schedule contains several likely suspects.

  • 7-Nov: Iowa State
  • 14-Nov: @ Brigham Young
  • 21-Nov: Texas Tech
  • 28-Nov: @ Houston

Just like I said about Central Florida, Baylor is facing a gauntlet of games in which they are likely to be underdogs. In other words, it’s very possible this title changes hands again before we get to post-season play.

What happens then is anybody’s guess…

In Case You Didn’t Know

Here at Dubsism, we have our own way of determining who is the #1 team in college football. Eschewing polls, debates, and the general silliness of a subjective means, we decided to go with “you’re the best until somebody beats you.” To do that, we went back to the very first college football game in 1869. Since there were only two teams, it was easy to decide the winner of that game was the best. We just took it from there.

In other words, we determine a champion just like boxing does. We know who was the original #1; tracing the path of the championship was a simple as following the winner. Even today, it remains an exercise in watching #1’s game, and crowning a new champ if they lose.

As is the tradition, here’s the full scroll of all 1,635 college football championship matches going all the way back to that very first game in 1869. Scroll down, click Page 2, and get ready for the biggest mega-scroll of your life…
