About Dubsism and It’s Features

Now you’ve done it.

Intentionally or otherwise, you’ve discovered the most interesting independent sports blog on the web. You shouldn’t read “sports” to mean box scores, game highlights, or anything of the sort. At Dubsism, sports serve as the mortar in a wall whose bricks are all about the endangered art of story-telling. The tagline in the header above only hints at that.

The inherent limitations of taglines notwithstanding, the one featured in the header above still manages a huge level of accuracy despite being succinct. The prime evidence is in the locus classicus for a post illustrating how sports and old movies became the first prism through which I viewed the world. On first glance, those things may feel incompatible. But in my view, they harmonize because sports and movies are inextricably linked by their synchronizing raison d’être…they both exist to entertain.

That harmonization vibrates on the string which ties sports and movies. From my perspective, this is all about the conundrum about life imitating art and vice versa. Sports play on that same string; life imitates art while art imitates life…and sports as a whole mirror both. You can pound out the “rock, paper, scissors” sequence with those three until your hands hurt, it won’t break the link between them. Those bonds have an unbreakable beauty built from sheer flexibility; they can all be viewed anyway you like. All three sides form a prism which is yours to be tilted as you see fit.

This is merely my tilt.

The fun part is that with flexibility comes variety. While I am the founder, I’m nowhere the sole contributor here. Dubsism was founded in 2009, and in that time a virtual library of content has accumulated. As a result, Dubsism offers several features dedicated to specific themes.

  • Conversations Not Meant To Be Public: Often times when situations arise in sports or in general, discussions happens between the involved parties that they may not want the world to know about. Dubsism has a crack investigative staff that can get the transcripts. The archives from the old Sports Blog Movement are here, and the most recent Dubsism pieces are here.
  • Change My Mind: Everybody has opinions, but ours tend to be right. Disagree? Do what the title says…
  • The Deep Six: In-depth looks at topics to reveal six facts you may not have known about them.
  • Grinds My Gears: As advertised…rants from our staff about stuff that pisses them off.
  • Guest Columns: The world is full of bloggers, and we work with them all the time. We’ve partnered with Chris Humpherys from SportsChump so often he has been named the Official Bartender of Dubsism. In our archives lies a wealth of delves into the entertainment world from contributor emeritus Ryan Meehan. From our in-house staff of by-lined authors featured in the side-bar to our “full-service” slate of visiting contributors, we’ve got a range of resources covering wherever the tentacles of the sports world may reach. Examples include:
    • Joe McGrath: Having been the legendary general manager of hockey’s Charlestown Chiefs, Mr. McGrath is out “subject matter expert” on all things about business and management in sports.
    • Jim Rockford: It’s no secret the sports world intersects with that of crime and nobody is better suited to handle those issues than a world-renowned private investigator.
    • King George VI (currently on hiatus): Since the sports world is becoming more international every day, who better to handle matters on a global socio-political scale than a recent reigning monarch?
    • Small Town Pizza Lawyer: For fully-nuanced breakdowns of legalities in the sports world, we have our own in-house counsel, but his primary duties is keeping things above-board with the J-Dub Gambling Challenge.
  • History: This doesn’t have it’s own category on Dubsism, but because I’m a history nerd, references to it are everywhere in these pages.
  • Lists: Who doesn’t love a list? We’re no exception, but as you might have guessed, you won’t get lists like this anywhere else.
  • Signs We Are Near The End Of Civilization: Believe it or not, the Bible brings us the concept of Armageddon. But there’s plenty of evidence supporting the idea we are marching ourselves off the cliff.
  • Movies: Dubsism has been described as a cross between ESPN and Turner Classic Movies; as such we have three primary cinema-related series:
  • Music: Besides being a history nerd, I’m also an amateur (read: Bad)musician. That means occasional dabbles into all things song. It’s an eclectic mix including the story-telling series Misty Water-Color Memories and an homage to radio legend Casey Kasem counting down the albums which most influenced me as an amateur/bad musician.
  • Story Time: Did somebody just mention story-telling? As advertised here…and just like with our Sports Analogies, many some of them have cinematic ties.
  • Tales of Depression and Sorrow (currently on hiatus, but we are ALWAYS on the look-out for those willing to share their pain) TDS is another series which traces it’s lineage back to the old Sports Blog Movement. Essentially, it’s all about the stories of long-suffering fans of good and not-so-good teams.  The SBM archives are here, the most recent Dubsism episodes here.

As you peruse these pages, you should keep one thing in mind. Dubsism is not for the faint of heart, because no topics are off-limits. Neither are differing views through the prism. Like I’ve said, this is just my view. I’m all about learning about what color the sky is in your world…with reason. The point is you’re being warned; if you can’t handle the occasional challenge to your belief system while remaining within the bounds of common civility, you might be best served getting your read on elsewhere.

In other words, debate YES…drama NO.

But if you candle handle looking at things in ways you may not be used to, and especially if you have a sense of humor, your prism may have just shown you an addition to your subscription list. After all, the only way to true discovery is too look at the the prism’s colors, not just your favorites.

  1. Hi,

Some really funny stuff. In the Gretzky Hindenburg photo, did you change the headline for the newspaper or did it alway says that experts believe it was “Failure to ‘use strict'”? If you added it, what does it mean? If not, nm.
    Thx

  2. Great blog man! Love the “childhood” Andy Dalton pic, and yes you’re right…Hue Jackson better rent for the time being. That team has been a “mistake by the lake” ever since they returned to Cleveland. Then again, if they beat the Birds on Sunday, I may regret saying that.

  3. Hey. How are you? I have a blog dedicated to classic cinema, and I just discovered your blog through another film site. I look forward to having a scroll through your blog. What I’ve read so far is excellent, and I like how you incorporate sports into classic film.

Seeing as you sometimes take part in blogathons, I quite often host blogathons, and I’m holding one in August. I would love to invite you to take part. Here is the link below with more details.
