The J-Dub Gambling Challenge 2018: Week 4 – The “Get Smart” Edition

One of my favorite shows ever, “Get Smart” was a spoof of 1960s James Bond done with “Airplane!” style gags and a dash of “Three Stooges” numb-skullery.  Written by Buck Henry and Mel Brooks, “Get Smart” was some of the funniest stuff on television by being smartly dumb.

As is wont for the formula of a successful sit-com, “Get Smart” was chock full of running jokes.  One the best was the line “Missed it by that much.” Main character Maxwell Smart would always utter this line after an epic failure. Picture the classic Hollywood bit about shooting the doorknob to open a locked door, except in Smart’s case, the bullet ricochets into a propane tank, and the resultant explosion takes out the whole building…then cue the line here.

That brings us to last week’s results.  The J-Dub Gambling Challenge bankroll “missed it by that much” to the tune of $93. This is largely due to missing three over/under bets by a combined total of 6 points. Granted, losing less than a c-note when you laid almost two grand in action isn’t as epic as destroying an entire building, but size notwithstanding, losses are still losses, and it makes it pretty hard to say you’re betting smart when you open the season with three straight drops.

But quitters never win, and winners never quit, especially when they better be a winner this week so they don’t have to pawn Mrs. J-Dub’s jewelry again.

Having said that, let’s get ready to gamble…

Thanks to the Supreme Court, gambling is no longer illegal at Bushwood, sir. However, the Supreme Court can’t really help me unless one of them is willing to keep Mrs. J-Dub from braining me with a cast-iron skillet if she found out how many dimes I’m dropping on college football.
