DISCLAIMER: There’s absolutely no gambling information in this installment. Come back on Thursday for Week Seven plays.
Last week’s episode of the J-Dub Gambling Challenge was based around a reference to those classic “airliner” disaster movies. Once you do that, there’s really no way to avoid using jokes from “Airplane!,” which just so happens to be one of the great comedies of all time. Using such an iconic movie as a maypole for yet another level of jokes is usually safe comedy territory, yet by looking at the range of feedback we got from that bit, it’s become clear we need to clear up a misconception about this classic knee-slapper.
Most think “Airplane!” is a parody of those 1970’s “Airport” movies. While those films are ripe with spoof material, and while they contain more cheese than Wisconsin, “Airplane!” is nearly a shot-for-shot satire of a 1957 movie called “Zero Hour.” Thanks to the wonder that is Youtube, a guy named DM Wood did an awesome job illustrating that.
What you have to understand is that when I’m not losing money on college football, or ranting about something sports-related, I’m a diseased classic film buff. Do you want have a discussion about how John Cazale was set to become one of the great actors of all time? I’m your guy. Do you want to debate where “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” ranks amongst the great comedies of all time? I’m your guy.
After the feedback I got from last week’s episode, it seemed like a good time to share a bit of classic movie enjoyment.
