Your New College Football Heavyweight Champion: The Brigham Young University Cougars

This marks the fourth time the Cougars from Provo have held the title, but in doing so the boys from BYU proved a point. The other day I wrote about moments when team get an opportunity to change the narrative about them. At the time, I was talking about Purdue’s having a chance to “level up.” BYU had a similar circumstance Saturday night and they didn’t let it go to waste.

Fans of the Irish can complain about that final play all they want, it doesn’t change the fact that they too had a moment of opportunity. Here was a shot for Notre Dame to show they can win a big game on the road; that they can beat somebody other that the bottom of the B1G Ten and Almost Competitive Conference (ACC). Hanging 52 on Rice didn’t even convince Uncle Ben.

But this game was personal for BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier.

“We’re tired of being disrespected. We know who we are. This was a great win for sure.”

~Bear Bachmeier

Bachmeier doubled-down from there with this quip which showed the level of hot sauce flowing through his veins for Notre Dame after a bad recruiting experience.

“Out of high school, Notre Dame disrespected me and my family pretty badly and I wasn’t going to lose to those guys. There was no way I was going to lose to those guys tonight.”

~Bear Dangerfield Bachmeier

Say what you will, but they have respect now. By sending the Irish skulking back to South Bend sans the Dubsism College Heavyweight Championship, Bear and his boys at BYU showed the college football world they can ball with the best.

In Case You Didn’t Know

Here at Dubsism, we have our own way of determining who is the #1 team in college football. Eschewing polls, debates, and the general silliness of a subjective means, we decided to go with “you’re the best until somebody beats you.” To do that, we went back to the very first college football game in 1869. Since there were only two teams, it was easy to decide the winner of that game was the best. We just took it from there.

In other words, we determine a champion just like boxing does. We know who was the original #1; tracing the path of the championship was a simple as following the winner. Even today, it remains an exercise in watching #1’s game, and crowning a new champ if they lose.

As is the tradition, here’s the full scroll of all 1,626 college football championship matches going all the way back to that very first game in 1869. Scroll down, click Page 2, and get ready for the biggest mega-scroll of your life…
