The magic number for this week is “90.” 1990 was the year “GoodFellas” was released. Taking a road trip along Interstate 90 through South Dakota will take you right through the heart of the country where “Dances With Wolves” was filmed. Easily one of the most over-rated movies ever made, somehow “Dances With Wolves” managed to beat “GoodFellas” for Best Picture.
In gambling, we call that a “bad beat;” there’s just no way that should have happened. While I’m pretty sure gambling on the outcomes of the Oscars is not nearly as prevalent as it is with college football, like all bad beats, somebody somewhere lost some serious money. What may not seem apparent to the non-gambler is that you can still win while being afflicted with the bad beat.
Take last week for example. Usually, when one hits all their big bets, one would expect to significantly fatten one’s bankroll. That is until one realizes a cavalcade of bad beats further down the betting sheet. That’s how one can lay out close to $1,500 in total action, comfortably hit the Payday of the Week (that SMU play they laughred at…) and end up right back at this week’s “magic number.”
That’s the bottom line for this week, sports fans. After all that, the J-Dub Gambling Challenge Bankroll scored a net profit of $90, making the season’s total $6,450. Say what ever you will, that’s still 90 bucks in the right direction, and last week is old news…so let’s get ready to gamble!
LEGAL DISCLAIMER (mandated by our very own Small Town Pizza Lawyer):
Thanks to the Supreme Court, gambling is no longer illegal at Bushwood, sir. However, the Supreme Court can’t really help me unless one of them is willing to keep Mrs. J-Dub from braining me with a cast-iron skillet if she found out how many dimes I’m dropping on college football. That means that as far as she knows, all wagers are mythical in nature and this is in no way, shape, or form a gambling advice column. In other words, if you lose your own “real” money, that’s nobody’s fault but yours, so don’t yell at me when we meet at the plasma center on Monday.
The Dubsism College Football Heavyweight Champ Bet:

At last: someone who agrees that Dances With Wolves is vastly over-rated. Thank you! I remember sitting through that preying that the wolf would devour Kevin Costner.
